SUMMER FUN: Free Resources, Gigs for You, Lessons, More!

How is it we're almost halfway through 2023?!

Well, I hope you are enjoying the year so far...and I have a LOT of resources for you on your musical journey! Before we hit them all, I thought it prudent to share some basic background info for those interested. You can read my bio & student success stories HERE.

OK, here we go....

1) Summer Lessons - We have a new summer group session of guitar classes starting Thursday, June 1st at Willis Music (attend in-person or via Zoom).....and I have several private lesson slots open NOW!

Contact me for details at sdmusiclab@gmail.com or 909-929-2007.

2) Free Articles/Lessons - Already this year, I've written (free for the public) lesson articles on Tina Turner, Gordon Lightfoot, & Harry Belafonte, plus a piece on "found percussion" (& basic concepts), lesson article "The Music of O Brother Where Art Thou?", and more all at SD Universe......as well as my entries at SD Magazine, which include pieces on "Heart of Glass", a tribute to Jeff Beck, lesson on Chris Stapleton's Superbowl performance of "Star Spangled Banner", another "Sonic Sorcery" lesson exploring alliteration, as well as the first two entries of the new LOOK BACK series, Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell" and the classic "Synchronicity" by The Police.

Active students also have access to our supplemental pages, where we've included a lot of info plus over 60 song charts so far this year!

3) Gig Opportunities - In addition to 4 solo/duo recitals per year and an additional 2-3 "rock band" recitals per year, we've also kicked off the "Second Sunday Open Mic" where we have students and non-students alike on stage to perform! We prioritize students participation, but the idea is also to allow greater networking with area musicians of all ages and all styles!

Contact me if YOU want to perform!

4) Field Trips - We're attempting to organize and confirm dates NOW to local radio stations and more, including a trip to be a crew member at Woodsongs Oldtime Radio Hour (shot in Lexington, KY and broadcast on 500+ stations worldwide and dozens of public TV stations across the country).

Details soon!

5) Misc - We'll be setting some VERY specific goals for summer to keep current students on track.....I'll be conducting several songwriting workshops in Lexington, Nicholasville, & more during the summer & fall.....you can subscribe to my Patreon Page for only $5/month - and for current students, at NO EXTRA COST (the $5 monthly fee for patreon will be deducted from your lesson tuition).....and all of my social media can be accessed via my FB page.

NEW at SDML Academy of Guitar

LOTS OF NEW opportunities coming from SDML Academy of Guitar! In short....

1) New 8-week session of group classes starts next week (March 19)....with private lessons on-going on monthly basis.

https://www.facebook.com/events/2074009552881728

2) About to announce location and date of next recital, which will be at a public venue! Set aside some time in MAY.....

3) NEW....."sit in with the band" program! JD, Paulie, and I will have about 15 songs we'll be playing live (monthly or quarterly) in a nice venue and you can learn any of them and jump on stage to play (guitar or bass or drums) or sing (lead or backup), and get the experience of playing in a band without the full commitment of learning the entire set. Nothing like it!

4) NEW....the acoustic version of the above! Akin to an open mic, but I'll be on stage to take the lead OR back you up. Been doing this sort of "jam" for my birthday the past coupla years and the format is definitely a great experience for all!

5) BRINGING back the STUDENT SHOWCASE gigs! From songwriter circle acoustic setting to full on rock bands, we'll have multi-artist shows exclusively featuring students' projects!

6) SD BOOKING is now handling WS preshow and some Troubadour preshow slots. Let me know if you're interested in opening for national acts!

7) I'm working on a new album now....but feel free to check out my last release (which came out last year) titled "...Public Domain..." that features old folk/blues songs with an uber-modern twists!

https://skinnydevilmusic.bandcamp.com/album/public-domain

8) THE SDML website is cranking...full of information as well as the student resource page with handouts and videos of everything you need....and more coming soon!

Lousiville May 20 (songwriting clinic)
Lexington May 21 ("play today" ukulele clinics)
Lexington May 28 (Blues Between the Bridges show)

7) SD MAGAZINE: Remember that Skinny Devil Magazine hosts everything from the "Guitar Gods" interview series (from unkown gurus to Grammy Award winners) to poetry, articles on the music business, and more.

Recent "Guitar Gods" intervirews with 7-time Grammy nominee Steve Morse....Michael Jackson guitarist Tommy "O" Organ....5-time Grammy nominee Ottmar Liebert.....Juno Award winner Jesse Cook....Berklee grad & SDM columnist Alan Robinson....Grammy winning blues legend Roy Rogers.....and more...with more on the way!!

8) NEW MUSIC: We just released my new 3-song EP of old blues & folk songs called "...Public Domain..." and I'm also featured on 2 songs on "Memories in Metal" by Gregory (the songs "Night Moves" and "Baker Street").

9) PRODUCTION: Working on Lexi-Fest Festival (Labor Day weekend), which should feature a dozen or more musical acts....plus Lexi-Fest shows like Prince and Michael Jackson Tribute shows (which will both feature a house band and a LOT of guests)...and more!

Much more going on, but we'll leave it there for now!

Stay tuned!

Holiday Cheer

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!!!!

I usually do the annual wrap-up about this time, but so much is happening I think I'll wait until January to sum up 2011.But today....today I'll make a few announcements I've been promising. From a Christmas/Holiday present to web-related up-dates and more.

1) Locations: Private lessons still at Hurst Music (corner of Mt. Tabor & Richmond Rd), Thursday groups at the Beaumont YMCA (Beaumont Circle), and Tuesday groups...looks like we'll continue at the COC (corner of Man o' War & Beaver Creek) for now....BIG sigh of relief (hahaha!).

2) Holiday Gift: I wanted to do more for all my students, but I'm at least gonna manage the list below this year:

A) BEAUMONT students: I can't offer discounts due to my arrangement with the YMCA, but I can offer this to all Beaumont guitar students registered for the 8-week January-February session - you can also come to my COC location (Tuesdays, same schedule) for FREE for the 8-week January-February session so that you'll have 2 lessons per week.

B) COC students: I can't offer the same deal (going to Beaumont), so ALL students registering for the 8-week January-February session will get 50% off!

C) HURST students: All of you get both a 20% discount for January AND get to come to the GTR-4 class at COC (Tuesday at 8pm) for FREE during the January-February session.

My apologies I am unable to do more this year. Hoping next year I can do a bit better!

3) Student resources: As we speak, we're doing a massive web-site re-design. Included in that re-design is the splitting off of most "content" to the new Skinny Devil Magazine (which will feature music, articles, reviews, lessons, art, literature, and more....not just from me, but from a variety of creators) and the re-vamped SkinnyDevil.com (which will have info on performance, lessons, composition, Alien Blue, student resources, and more). The student resources will include an expanded student play-along set (formerly known as the student play-along CD), rhythm drills, classic & new song charts (some in "studio cheat-sheet" form , others in tab/notation), a gig guide, jam trax, and much more.

4) Student Recital: The next student recital will be in February. A date has not yet been selected, but likely late in the month.

I will be doing the 2011 wrap-up soon...so please remind me of all YOUR music accomplishments in 2011 (no way I can remember it all!) so I can include it in the newsletter.

I may also have a few private lessons slots opening, so please let me know if YOU are still in the market for private lessons....or you can also call Paul Felice, Chris Simpson, Luke Jackson, Michael Fogler, Dave Peterson, or Tim Fowler.

I'm always interested in creating opportunities for everyone....so if you are interested in gigs, becoming an SDML instructor, studio opps, or partnering with me in some way to work in the music biz, please don't hesitate to let me know!

That's all for now. See ya soon!!!!!!!
